Dr. J.M. Sánchez-Vizcaíno Rodríguez


Born in Murcia, Spain, in 1951. He obtained DVM and Ph.D. degree at the Universidad Complutense of Madrid. He performed post graduate studies on animal immunology and virology at Cornell University, New York. 

At the present, is professor of the Animal Health at Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain.

The scientific works of Dr. Sánchez-Vizcaíno have  been orientated to study the immunological  mechanisms and diagnosis of some of the main porcine diseases (ASF,CSF, PRRS, SVD, FMD).

Among the results of his research, it must be point out a large number of reagents produced (monoclonal antibodies and antigens), and the adaptation of different techniques and methods to the immunological evaluation, which have been of great importance in the control and eradication of different diseases. He has also worked in diseases of other species, contributing to the better knowledge of the African Horse Sickness, with new diagnostic methods and the production of a new subunit vaccine. He has recently obtained a recombinant vaccine against Myxomatosis and Rabbit Hemorrhagic Viral disease. 

He is the author of more than one hundred publications in international scientific magazines, as well as several chapters in books of  international prestige. He has directed a large number of reseach projects, as well as several Ph.D. thesis in different animal infectious diseases. He achieved the National Award in Porcine Investigation "Anaporc 1990" and the International Scientific Porcine Award "Porco Bravo" 1999, and the award on Health and Swine Production (animal production journal) in 2000. Since 1990, he is a consulting expert of  the International Office for Epizootics (OIE) and FAO.
